New to Cake Decorating?

Here is how most beginners start. No experience necessary.

1

Pick Your First Project

A simple buttercream birthday cake is the best place to start. Two layers, one color, basic piping. You can finish the whole thing in an afternoon.

2

Grab the Basics

Turntable, offset spatula, piping bags, a few tips (round #12, star #1M, petal #104), gel food coloring, and cake boards. That covers 90% of beginner projects. Staff will walk you through exactly what to buy.

3

Decorate (and Ask Questions)

The staff have helped thousands of first-timers. Bring your phone with a photo of what you want, and they will tell you which tip makes that pattern, what icing consistency to use, and how to fix it if things go sideways.

4

Level Up With a Class

Once the basics feel comfortable, a hands-on class is the fastest way to jump to the next level. You will learn techniques that take months to figure out from YouTube videos alone.

Popular Techniques (and What You Need for Each)

Every technique uses specific tools. Here is a quick rundown of what each one requires.

Buttercream Piping

Flowers, borders, writing, rosettes. You need piping bags, a coupler, and the right tips. Start with a round tip (#12), a star tip (#1M), and a petal tip (#104).

Fondant Work

Covering cakes, cutting shapes, making figures. You need fondant, a rolling pin, smoothers, and cutters. Gum paste for flowers and detail work that needs to hold its shape.

Chocolate Molding

Bonbons, bars, lollipops, hollow eggs. Polycarbonate molds give you the snap and shine. Silicone molds are easier for beginners. Both work with Mercken's coating wafers or tempered couverture.

Edible Image Transfers

Print any photo onto frosting sheets or wafer paper and lay it on buttercream or fondant. We handle the printing here in the shop. Bring us your image file or email it over.

Candy Making

Chocolate coating, lollipops, cake pops, candy bark. Coating wafers melt clean without tempering. Molds, sticks, cellophane bags, and packaging are all in the candy aisle.

Questions from First-Time Visitors

I have never decorated a cake before. Can I still shop here?

Most of our customers are home bakers with no formal training. Tell the staff what you are trying to make. They will walk you to the right supplies and skip the things you do not need yet.

How is this different from buying cake decorating supplies at a craft store?

We are a specialty shop. Every item in the store is for baking, decorating, or candy making. The staff are decorators themselves, not general retail employees. You get specific answers to specific questions, and the selection goes deeper than what any general craft store carries.

Do you offer private cake decorating lessons?

Our regular classes are small groups (6 students max), which gives each person individual attention. For private lessons, call the shop at (323) 289-8807 to ask about availability and pricing.

Can you print a photo onto a cake for me?

We print custom edible images on frosting sheets and wafer paper, but we do not bake or decorate cakes. You bring or bake the cake, we print the image, and you (or your baker) place it on top. Most prints are ready same day or next business day.

What brands do you carry?

We stock Fat Daddio's pans, Ateco and Wilton tools, AmeriColor and Chefmaster gel coloring, Mercken's and Guittard chocolate, CelCakes fondant and gum paste, and more. The emphasis is on professional-grade products that hold up to serious decorating work.

Is Gloria's good for professional bakers too?

Yes. Bakery owners, caterers, and professional decorators have been buying here since the 1970s. We carry bulk chocolate, full-sheet cake boards, commercial piping tips, and edible ink supplies. No wholesale account or minimum order required.
